Every year our ward has a Chili Cook-off Contest in connection with our ward Halloween/ Trunk or Treat Party. I wasn't planning on entering the contest, but Sterling really likes my chili so he suggested that I enter. The winner last year was our friend, John Englund. Sterling had been giving him crap about how my chili was going to beat his this year. Well, I entered mine and it was stiff competition this year, 15 chili's were entered and I WON!!!
I couldn't believe it. When it was time for John to hand off the trophey to the next winner, he was just shaking his head out of disbelief because Sterling had been giving him so much crap. Sterling went up to the stage to get the trophey with me and people were making fun of him because he didn't make the chili, but I did. It was fun! I have never won something before... Yeah!
This is the awesome trophey that I won. They engraved my name on it and I get braggin rights for the year. Wo-who!
So, I've been asked, what's your recipe? I don't really have one, I just throw spices in. I think this is what I put in for my winning chili:
Winning Chili Recipe
1 lb ground beef, browned with some fresh garlic and onion
1 or 2 cans diced tomatoes
whichever kind of beans you like, I usually put in pinto and kidney beans
Water
All of these spices and I put a lot of each in:
Sea salt
Pepper
Sugar (little bit!)
Lawry's Seasoning Salt
Creole Seasoning
Cayenne
Crushed Red Pepper
Cumin (tiny bit!)
Garlic Salt
Chili Powder
Packet of Taco Seasoning
I think that is it. I seriously just pull out whatever I have in the cupboard. I add the seasonings a little bit at a time and constantly add more and more as I go along. And then I let it simmer for at least 3 hours. I love it and Sterling loves it. It is the only homemade chili he likes. (He likes Nally canned chili- blegh, gag me now!)
I hope you like it!

We love chili! How much does this make? I want to try it but I am afraid it'll be too much for just scott and I...
The sign of a good chef! No need for a specific recipe!
That's a good question. I'm not sure. Maybe for 6-8? I think when I make it for just Sterling and me, I think I just use 1/2-3/4 lb of ground beef and I scale down the amount of beans and tomatoes to our own liking, but then we always have leftovers that we each eat the next day. So, I'm guessing that much makes about 4 servings. Sorry I can't really give you a clearcut answer!
How cool! Congrats Anna! :) That trophy is pretty sweet.
I will definitely try your recipe - I don't have a good homemade chili recipe yet :)
Congrats! That's how I like to cook too... just kinda throw stuff in :) I made a roast a couple weeks ago and realized I didn't own very many seasonings so I ended up putting Pizza Seasoning (among other things) on it, lol.
I think I'm gonna try this in my Taco Bake!
Congrats! I am now craving a bowl of warm home made chili. To bad the kids don't like chili. Oh well, more for me!
